Short Answer

On 1 October 2026 the FDA sent warning letters to Amazon and Walmart about herpes “remedies” sold and shipped through their sites. The FDA named nine products on Amazon, three of which were also on Walmart, and said all of them are unapproved drugs that cannot legally be sold. The key line in the letter: the FDA has not approved any over the counter product to treat, cure or prevent any sexually transmitted infection. Herpes is treated with prescription antivirals, and nothing sold without a prescription can cure it.

If you have searched for how to get rid of herpes, you have seen these products. They sit next to real medicine in search results, they have thousands of reviews, and they promise exactly what a frightened person wants to hear. This month the FDA stepped in. Here is what the letters say, which products were named, why the wording on the packaging is a red flag, and what actually works.

What the FDA did

FDA staff bought the products from amazon.com in July 2026. Outside sellers listed them, but Amazon and Walmart stored and shipped the orders through their own fulfilment programs, which is why the letters went to the retailers themselves and not only to the sellers (source). The letters are signed by the director of the FDA’s Office of Unapproved Drugs and Labeling Compliance and give each company 15 business days to explain how it will fix the problem (Amazon letter, Walmart letter).

On the same day the FDA also wrote directly to two of the makers. One letter went to OrganiCare, which sells HClear for him and FemiClear (source), and another to Aidance Scientific, which sells Terragen HG Formula through an Amazon storefront (source). If the companies do not fix the problems, the FDA can seize products or go to court to stop sales (source).

Product names, and every phrase shown in quotation marks, are taken word for word from the FDA letters linked in the sources below. Wording without quotation marks is our short description. A warning letter is the FDA’s formal notice that it considers a product to be violating the law. It is not a court ruling.

Why the FDA says this matters

The FDA’s concern is not only that these products do not cure herpes. It is what happens while people rely on them. According to the agency, delayed care for sexually transmitted infections can lead to serious complications, and people who believe they have been treated may pass an infection to a partner without knowing (source).

With herpes there is a specific trap. Outbreaks heal on their own within days or weeks, with or without any cream. So almost any product applied during an outbreak will seem to work, because the sore was going to heal anyway. That is how a cream with no proven effect collects glowing reviews. Meanwhile the person using it has not been tested, does not know which type of herpes they have, and is not taking the medication that actually lowers the chance of passing it on.

The red flags on the label

The FDA letters quote some of the most common phrases in this market. Here is how to read them.

  • “Kills 99.9% of the herpes simplex I & II viruses.” This exact claim appears on a FemiClear web page quoted by the FDA (source). Killing virus on a lab surface says nothing about the virus that lives inside your nerve cells, which is where herpes comes back from. No cream reaches it.
  • “Homeopathic” or “all natural.” Neither word is a loophole. The FDA says homeopathic drugs must meet the same legal requirements as any other drug, and it found that these products did not even qualify under its homeopathic guidance (source).
  • “Never have an outbreak again.” That was the claim on Viruxo’s website when the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission sent a round of warning letters to STD supplement sellers in 2011. An FDA official said at the time: “No STD treatments should be available over the counter. They should be prescribed by a doctor” (source).
  • Reviews saying sores disappeared in 24 hours. The OrganiCare letter quotes a customer review claiming exactly that (source). Outbreaks heal on their own, so timing tells you nothing.
  • Protocols, ebooks and “cure” programs. There is no cure for HSV-2. Anyone selling one is selling hope, not medicine. Our vaccine and cure tracker shows where real cure research stands.

What actually treats herpes

TreatmentWhat it doesHow you get it
Valacyclovir (Valtrex)Shortens outbreaks, prevents them when taken daily, and cut transmission to partners by about 48% in a large trialPrescription, cheap generic
AcyclovirSame job as valacyclovir, taken more often each dayPrescription, cheap generic
FamciclovirSame job, a third optionPrescription
Hovilpri (pritelivir)New drug for immunocompromised adults whose herpes did not respond to the three abovePrescription, specialist use

The first three are the CDC’s recommended treatments for genital herpes (source). Daily valacyclovir reduced transmission to partners by about 48% in the trial that settled the question (source). And in a sign of where real progress is happening, the FDA approved Hovilpri in October 2026, the first herpes drug with a new mechanism in decades. In its main trial, all lesions healed by day 28 in 63% of patients on Hovilpri compared with 34% on other treatments, though it is only for people with weakened immune systems whose herpes resisted standard drugs (source). Our antiviral comparison covers all of the options.

If you already bought one of these

  • Do not rely on it to protect a partner. No over the counter product has been shown to reduce transmission.
  • Get a proper diagnosis. A swab of a fresh sore tells you whether it is herpes and which type. Our testing guide explains how.
  • Get real treatment. Antivirals are inexpensive and can be prescribed online in most of the US. See our treatment guide.
  • Report problems. If a product caused a reaction, you can report it to the FDA through MedWatch (source).

The bottom line

The FDA has now said it plainly to the two biggest retailers in the country: these herpes products are unapproved, and no over the counter product is approved to treat any sexually transmitted infection. Outbreaks fade on their own, which is why these creams seem to work. Real treatment is a cheap prescription, and it does something no cream can, which is lower the chance of passing herpes on.

Frequently asked questions

Which herpes products did the FDA warn Amazon about?

The FDA named nine products in its 1 October 2026 letter to Amazon: FemiClear, HClear for him, HerpCare Ointment, HerpCare Spray, Herstat GST, Genital Herpes Ointment, RoyceDerm Herpes Relief Cream, Terragen HG Formula and Genital Herpes Intimate Wash.

Is there an over the counter cure for herpes?

No. The FDA states that it has not approved any over the counter drug for the treatment, cure, mitigation or prevention of any sexually transmitted infection. There is no cure for HSV-2.

Do herpes creams sold online work?

None of the products named by the FDA are approved to treat herpes. Outbreaks heal on their own, which can make any cream look like it worked. Prescription antivirals are the proven treatment.

Are homeopathic herpes remedies legal?

The FDA says homeopathic drugs must meet the same legal requirements as other drugs. In its October 2026 letters it treated homeopathic herpes products as unapproved new drugs.

How can I get rid of herpes permanently?

There is currently no way to remove herpes from the body. Prescription antivirals such as valacyclovir prevent and shorten outbreaks and lower the chance of passing it on, and cure research is still in early stages.

What is the new herpes drug approved by the FDA in 2026?

Hovilpri (pritelivir), approved in October 2026 for immunocompromised adults whose herpes lesions did not respond to acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir.

What should I do if I used one of these herpes products?

Stop relying on it, get a proper diagnosis with a swab test of any sore, and ask for prescription antivirals. You can report any side effects to the FDA through MedWatch.
